Cutting a Pomegranate - A Science Experiment

As I have told you before, we love our pomegrante juice so when the kids asked me how the juice is made/comes from, I realized that I had not actually brought the actual fruit into the house. Gosh, amazing that all these years have passed without eating the seeds from the actual fruit.

I began to really think about how long it had been since I had opened one and ate the seeds. I think I was 12. As you will see in the video, the kids are excited as this like some sort of science experiment. They are looking forward to seeing what it looks like inside and see what Mom is doing. Try this with your own kids.

By the way, you will see in this video (as with others), my youngest is a bit of a challenge. However, 99% of the time, he gives it a try, but at his own pace. I can respect that.

A great way to get the seeds out is cut the fruit in half. Put the half upside down in your hand, tap the back of the fruit with a wooden spoon really hard and the seeds will drop out. The cut part needs to be down in your palm, does that make sense. Give that a try, I bet your son might like the tapping of the fruit. You might have to do it a few times but I find this isnt messy at all.

If you put in a bowl of water set in your sink it lessens the mess slightly-I love pomegrante-but it is a pain to clean.

I can't believe I still haven't cooked with a pomegrante! Cute kids :).

Love the video - kids look like they really enjoyed it. My salad last night had Pom seeds in it - so yummy. Pomegranates are in mythology too - the story of Persephone. Learned it in middle school and never will forget!

My father-in-law has been giving me lots of these and I have been thoroughly enjoying them : ) The one thing I have found is that I have to wear gloves when I peel them because my nails turn all black if I don't.

I tried it once and haven't had one since. Just too much of a pain, although if someone did it for me I would be more than happy to eat it ;)

Jenn, what memories you bring. I ate them so often growing up. My grandparents had several trees growing in their yard. Sadly my kids have not have the fruit too so I am going to make an effort to get them..

I still remember having so many stained clothing from sitting out in summer eating them.

Aw, I love pomegranates! I have like three of them in my fridge that I just haven't found the time to disembowel...Luckily they keep for at least a month in there! :P

Yup, under water is the way to go! No need to use a strainer, though. The seed will sink to the bottom + the membrane will float to the top.

For pomegranate, use a hammer before cutting. Hammer all over. Cut cross wise and voila, they should pop right out. Put in some ice water and membrane floats to the top. Once you get really good, you can just pop them right onto a salad without worrying about ice water. Only use what you intend, leave rest in skin. This is what I've learned over the years. But, I still have stained shirts. :) I love to cook with kids too.

hmm what a difficult way to cut pomegranate. if you score the fruit there's no splatter of the juice and if you just pull the seeds gently from the pomegranate it makes it very easy to eat with little mess. I almost always do it this way and i've never popped a seed while doing so. You just have to be slightly gentle with pulling it out.
