Jamie Oliver & Disney Family Revolution Giveaway

Back in March and April , the show 'Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution' took the country by storm and I was thrilled to see the reaction. Whether you liked and agreed with everything he had to say, it was an eye-opener (and hopefully game changer) for Americans and food.

Luckily, Disney Family.com has recognized the importance of eating and living healthy, and wanted to provide tips and advice on slashing sugar, cooking light, healthy recipes and more. That’s why they partnered with Jamie Oliver on brand new site content focused on living better and living well. The site features recipes and tips from Jamie that address how families can rediscover ways to cook simple, delicious and affordable meals. In addition, if you missed any of the episodes of Food Revolution, you can watch them on the site.

This gift pack is provided by Disney Family.com

To celebrate the partnership, I am giving away a gift pack that includes Jamie Oliver’s book 'Jamie’s Food Revolution', Family.com branded over mitts and apron, a cutting board and bowl set. I am looking forward to another household having Jamie's book and hopefully incorporating some of the ideas and recipes into their family meal time.

I have a two year old. Here are some ways we're focusing on healthy food choices 1) we have a small edible garden and we visit the farmer's mkt as often as possible 2) getting my son involved in helping me cook 3) exploring choices beyond the kids menu 4) eating together at the table

"How do I encourage my family to make healthy decisions"...

I would say by setting and being a good example. As a personal chef (and one who cooks for some people with medical issues) its easy to see the eye-roll coming when I start talking about healthy foods and ingredients. But I run, do yoga and am extremely conscious about what I eat. When I'm not over-tired, it does show ;-)

I have 2 nieces (3 and 18 months) and my boyfriend has twin 9yr old girls. When I have the opportunity to cook for, or with, them I try to make a new or healthlier ingredient fun. For an example, on Mother's Day the twins and I made several batches of granola bars together. They wanted a snack to take to take to their lacrosse game. Of course they wanted M&Ms and chocolate in them. So to make them a bit healthier I included agave, brown rice syrup, oats and nuts. The syrups are fun to 'play' with because they can be squeazed into the mixing bowl, etc. While mixing and playing with the dough I explained how nuts and chocolate together can give you lots of energy on the field. Dried cranberries and dates were a bonus. Suddenly they wanted to pack as much 'energy' into their bars as possible ;-)

So I guess my 2 cents would be 1) being a healthy example for your family to see, and 2) educating the kids in a fun way.

Lastly, my boyfriend is a big guy (6'2" and about 240lbs). He exercises a lot but struggles with feeling satiated and therefore overeats. So I have introduced him to more complete grains like quinoa and barley that contain protein and complex carbs. Again, the eye-roll... But subsituting them where he may usually have rice works well and knowing they have amino acids and protein for building muscle gets his attention. And then sometimes I just sneak a cup of organic red quinoa in his morning protein shakes ;-)

Thanks for promoting Jamie, I'm a huge fan!!

I would love to win this package! My family watched Jamie Oliver's Food revolution together and it really made us want to change our eating habits! We already eat many things organic and form our own garden--we also joined a local CSA this year and have been thrilled with our new ways of eating!

I try to lead by example and educate my loved ones on healthier foods and preparation. My husband has come a long way since we first met! :)

I agree with leading by example, especially important for me with the kids. Great post!

I have a three year old and a six month old and I try to involve them in the whole food process. My three year old picks out different fruits and veggies to try at the grocery store. We have made the Saturday farmers market a tradition, and she LOVES buying stuff there and taking it home to eat. It takes a little longer, but putting an apron on her and having her help me in the kitchen usually ensures she will eat whatever is for dinner! I also try to make food fun by using cookie cutters, toothpicks, making veggies into "animals" etc.

Can't wait to hear some other tips!

In addition to constantly cooking delicious meals for my family, I also host dinner parties for my friends (my extended family). Every time I cook for them I make the meals healthy without them really knowing it, as most of them think Spaghetti-O's is a food group. Sometimes this method works and sometimes I can't fool them, but it's a way to promote healthy living to those in my life as well as socially connect.

We've done a couple things recently to encourage healthful eating:
1) using cauliflower instead of potato as a base for "mashed" goodness (add sweet potato, red peppers, broccoli, or other things to make fun colors for the kids!)
2) started putting taco meat on top of lettuce to create a salad that is tasty, but more healthful than eating corn tortillas all the time.

Recently I've taken to eating all my servings of veggies and fruit per day. I eat 3-4 servings of veggies and 3 of fruit. It's amzaing how much room you don't have for sweets when you eat all the fruits/veggies you should be getting!

I let my children help me when it comes to grocery store shopping. They are allowed to pick out a produce item they want to try and then we come home and try it. This is a great way to get them to try different things.

Now that the farmer's market has opened, we've started buying our produce there. It tastes so much better than what we can get at the grocery store, and it lasts longer, too.

I have stopped going to the grocery and now instead go to the local farmer's market every single week. This way I support my local farmers and choose healthier things to eat!

-teaching my 2 teenage boys how to cook healthy meals and letting them help plan the menus for the week- serving lots of fresh fruits and vegetables- avoiding processed foods- limiting treats to be treats and snacks are something healthy in between meals- limiting how often we eat out- importance of exercise....

I talk to my kids alot about the ingredients in things we would buy verses making it at home. It was an eye opener for them and they tend to choose things with less in them...it is a start!

I love new aprons :-)

My husband helped found a farmer's market in our community--it opens for the first time this weekend. It's not only a good thing for our family, but our entire community! I'm so proud of him.

We are cooking more at home and using fresh foods and whole grains instead of processed stuff when we can, which is healthier for us and tastes better too.

I volunteer at a shelter for abused women & their children. In addition to cooking for them, I also teach the women and kids how to eat and cook healthfully without spending a lot of money. I also show how home-cooked meals are cheaper than buying and eating fast food.

Since my daughter can read I educate my kids to know what artificial colors are and also they know what nutrients do for their body 0 like calcium = strong bones etc.

My 2 year old eats a pretty balanced diet, but I was becoming frustrated with his lack of *excitment* over veggies. It came to the point where I was just giving up and sneaking veggie purees in meals when I could. I decided that he needed to see me snacking on broccoli, celery, carrots during the day and "raving" about how delicious they were. he has come a long way in just a couple months!

I encourage our family by offering as many healthy options as possible. I also get my 5 year old involved with planting and picking food. He's more likely to eat it if he helped to grow it!

In drink choices my son knows to avoid anything with the words "cocktail" in it because it means it is mostly sugar.

I stopped buying junk food for snacks - if we don't have them around the house we don't eat them! I've tried to replace them slowly with what I think of now as more normal snacks - crackers, cheese, vegetables, hummus, etc.

When both my children ask for something sweet I tell them if they eat a healthy snack now and their next meal they can have the treat after.

I have a 2-year-old daughter and we recently enrolled in a mommy-n-me cooking class! It's great- the kids get to see and touch all the food and make their very own healthy creations. We also live right near the Union Square Farmer's Market in NYC, and go there often. My daughter loves sampling all the different produce (she's a huge fan of rhubarb!) and bringing it home to eat!
