Fast & Frugal Friday & Old Bay Giveaway: Pork Chops with Orange-Garlic Vinaigrette

As soon as you hear ‘Old Bay’ what do you think of? For me, it brings back memories. Memories from my mom's and grandma's kitchen. It was a staple in out kitchen when I was young. In fact, I think it was a requirement in 1970’s kitchens.

I am also a huge believer in having herbs, spices and your favorite blends on hand so that you can take a basic meal and add some depth and excitement. So, on the top shelf of my spice drawer is the familiar canister of Old Bay.

Most people seem to relate it to Seafood and yes, it is perfect, however, I use it in a multitude of dishes so when I was offered a 'Basket of the Bay', I jumped and guess what? There is one for you too but I will not share details until I take you through the recipe.



Pork Chops with Garlic-Orange Vinaigrette.
I basically followed Martha Stewart's recipe however:
1. I used 3 thick pork chops instead of tenderloins and seasoned them with Old Bay
2. I did not use honey in the sauce but used a teaspoon or agave nectar
3. I used a mini-chopper in lieu of a blender
4. I did not saute spinach but simply used baby spinach with the vinaigrette on it. Rather quick and easy prep.
5. You may wish to hold off on adding pepper until you taste first.


The “Basket of the Bay” set includes a full sized canister of OLD BAY Seasoning, an OLD BAY Seafood Steamer bag, a key chain, tattoos, a cool logo beach towel all packed into a great bag.

I have a can myself. But I don't have any kitchen memories about it because I never used it until recently. I wonder if it's a little bit of a New England thing? GREG

my favorite recipe was when I was about 11 and decided to make my mom her favorite meal for her birthday -chicken cordon blue. complete with sides and cake. I was going nuts in the kitchen but I pulled it off and it made her day

I would have to say that my favorite kitchen memory is of the first time I baked on my own. I was probably about 8 and my mother found a simple coffee cake recipe (probably using a yellow cake mix) for me to try. She let me do it all alone and invited my grandparents over to share it. My reading skills were not 100% yet and I grabbed the CUMIN instead of CINNAMON. You can imagine the rest. The reason it is such a good memory is that everyone graciously ate the cake. I learned that you can take risks in the kitchen and if things turn don't turn out, it is not the end of the world.

My favorite kitchen memories are those spent with my grandmother. When I visited her we would always sit in the kitchen while she cooked an she would tell us stories about her life in Costa Rica. I loved those times because not only did I leanrn to cook but I have those memories left of my granny.

My funniest kitchen memory:
I was so excited to make my first lemon meringue pie at 12 years old. My mom let me make it all be myself so I was very proud to serve it. Everyone took there first bite to a gritty surprise, I had used cornmeal instead of cornstarch. Whoops!

The pork chops look yummy! I just got a pork loin on sale so this will be perfect to try!

I have a can in my cupboard-my favorite kitchen memory is how it all got started. The Easy Bake Oven-I loved my easy bake and making little cakes and I was so excited when I got to make my own batter and put it in the big oven.

My favorite memory is that after my mom (who I thought made the BEST scrambled eggs) taught me how, at around age 7, I did it every Saturday. One day I asked her why and she said that mine were better then hers. It made me so happy/proud I still smile when I think about it.

So, my favorite kitchen memory. I have lots. Every year my mom and I would stay up really late one night in December baking cookies and breads for all the family and our friends. We had baked all evening and for the last item to bake, I had doubled a pumpkin bread recipe and put about 14 mini loaves in the oven to bake for an hour. After they came out, we wanted to treat ourselves to a slice of warm, sweet bread before bed. To our dismay I had forgotten to add the sugar to the recipe so they bread tasted terrible! I was so mad and tired! 14 loaves wasted! Ugggg! Had to do it all over again the next day.

My favorite kitchen memory is being a foodie teen and spending the weekend with my aunt harvesting tomatoes and basil from her postage stamp garden outside her apartment and then cooking down homemade tomato sauce in between girl talk. She's still my favorite aunt.

Would love to win this Old Bay package. Old Bay is my husband's favorite "go to" seasoning when it's his turn in the kitchen.

I love this contest, because I am an Old Bay fan!!! My 8YO and I call each other "salmon buddies," because we both love to eat salmon. And, we always sprinkle Old Bay on it. Yummy!

My favorite kitchen memories always include my grandma. If I have to choose just one, I would say it was baking banana cookies with her, then waiting for them to freeze, and eating them frozen. She'd invite just me to spend the night and we'd bake together and eat frozen cookies together. She had a way of making you feel like the only person in the world when you were with her.

After she died, I missed her more than I felt I could handle. So, I would bake banana cookies just to get a sense that she was still around. One whiff of the cookies baking and I felt like she was right here with me again.

I love how baking and cooking brings people together... and keeps them near, even when they are gone :).

Hey, Jen--just want to say that I love the new blog look. It's been a little while since I visited (I've been super-crazy-busy lately), but I think it's awesome. Very clean and fresh and navigable. I can't wait to explore.

My favorite kitchen memory...would have to be of when I was very young and just hanging out at my Grandma Wray's knee in her big old farmhouse kitchen in Victoria, VA. It was old, had a certain scent, an apron sink where we washed freshly snapped beans and other veggies from the garden, and a big, old fashioned WOOD stove. It was everything you could imagine in a farm kitchen--authentic, working--plank floors, well water, creaky cabinets, cold milk in glass jugs...it inspired, obviously, some very sensory memories. It's probably where I developed a very real and long-lasting love of GOOD food.
