Grass-Fed Ground Beef Burgers with Mushrooms, Carmelized Onions & Feta

Recently, I took my mom to the 'local' Trader Joe's (35 minutes away) and picked up a pound of grass-fed ground beef. I have only had it once (at brgr in NYC for Martha Stewart Blog Show) and loved the burger so I thought I would try it at home.

I thought the price of $5.99 was reasonable considering I would make three adults sized and two smaller kiddo sized burgers from it. I really wanted to taste the meat itself so I only added some salt & pepper and planned to provide plenty of accompaniments for burger building.

Honestly, I took the first bite from the burger with no bread etc. and found a big taste difference. There was definitely a stronger flavor that I would need to adjust to however, when eaten with the feta, caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms, I only tasted a great burger. I look forward to buying more next time I am out at TJ's.

So I did not realize how spoiled I was growing up with regards to beef. My grandparents are ranchers and have large pastures that their cows roam around in. The cows are rotated to keep them fed very well. We would get beef from my grandparents every year and I could not bring myself to buy beef for years after I left home because it tastes so different (and since we got ours from the butcher, it was pretty much 93-7 or 95-7 for hamburger.) There is such a difference!

I too was raised on 'home grown' beef just as Crystal was. My husband and I now raise and sell Natural (no hormones or antibiotics) Grass-fed and Corn-finished beef. Nothing compares...we love it!

I have been meaning to make burgers for ever so long now! This is great and I love the carmelized onions added as a condiment. Yummy!

I gotta try this! Also, I need to get some grass fed beef. For a meat eater like me, it's long overdue. Also, it was fun doing yet another food project with you!

That burger looks great. I recently discovered that the Wegmans near (30 mins away) my house has grass fed beef... I'm loving it!
